Description

Guy Malet RBA - (British 1900-1973) A fine early 20th Century watercolour entitled 'On the Beach', Exmouth, Devon. Signed with initials, gilt frame, reverse with inscribed label. In excellent condition

The landscape painter and wood engraver Guy Malet was born in Southsea, Hampshire. He attended the Royal Military College in Sandhurst, before he studied at the London School of Art under the painter/illustrator John Hassall (1868-1948) and at the Grosvenor School of art under the painter Iain MacNab. Malet exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Redfern Gallery, and elsewhere. In 1936 he was elected to membership in the Royal Society of British Artists (R.B.A.). He was also a member of the Society of Wood Engravers (S.W.E.) His work is represented in the national collection housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and elsewhere.
At their best, Malet's watercolours combine a modernist's sensibility of form and perspective with sure draughtsmanship and a traditionalist's sensitivity to the watercolour medium.
