This charming watercolour depicts a young woman seated in a summer garden reading a love letter. The scene is inspired by the popular Victorian novel Celia's Arbour, a story which centres around Portsmouth society through the eyes of three affluent young people. The artist captures the scene in fine detail showing great attention to light and tone within the composition. Signed to the lower right. There are some small graphite sketches by the artist on the reverse. Beautifully presented in a 19th century gilt frame. Exhibition label to the reverse inscribed with title, artist name and address. On paper.
