The sitter returns the viewer's gaze with a serious expression, his face dramatically illuminated with chiaroscuro lighting. Artist Biography
Gustav Rienäcker (1861-1935) was a German painter and university professor. He studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, the Artesis Hogeschool in Antwerp, and the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles. He lived in Munich and taught painting at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. Rienäcker was best known as a portrait painter, but he also painted landscapes and still lifes. He was appointed as an official court portrait painter, and exhibited several times at the Munich Glass Palace.
