Gordon Clifford Barlow (1913-2005) was born in Bradford and studied - and later taught - at Bradford School of Art. He also studied with the artist Herbert Royle. Barlow trained and worked as a self-employed sign-writer and decorator. Alongside his main source of income as a sign-writer, he also painted prolifically, mainly in oils. His work in this field was popular enough to allow him to work freelance as a professional artist. His subjects were typically of landscapes and village scenes, particularly in the Wharfe Valley area of Yorkshire. He also painted a number of village and landscape scenes in France and Italy. He exhibited at the Paris Salon.
