Artist Biography
Gladys Mary Rees was a painter, etcher and illustrator, born in Tooting, London. She attended Chelsea School of Art, 1915-17 where her contemporaries included Edward Burra, William Chappell and Terence Cuneo. By 1917 she had been appointed a part-time tutor at the School while still studying and by 1920 her position became permanent. She spent the next seven years in London teaching and earning a living as an illustrator of children's books and a poster designer. Her work included posters for London Underground, an example of which is in the London Transport Museum. In 1927 the year of her first RA exhibit, she married and moved to a farm in Lincolnshire. She often signed her paintings as ‘G. Rees Teesdale’ after this date. She showed regularly at the RA, NEAC, UA and SWA of which she became an elected member in 1939.
