A charming Venetian scene by Italian artist Giuseppe "Bepi" Marino (1903-1975), featuring grand building façades and gondolas reflected in the still waters. The artist renders the scene with impressionistic brushwork and a harmonious palette of muted blue, green and purple tones. Signed to the lower right. Well presented in a rustic frame with the artist's name inscribed to a metal plate affixed to the lower edge. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is good for a picture of this age, with some slight discolouration. Marks and scuffs to the frame. The frame is not painted around the edges.

Artist Biography

Giuseppe “Bepi” Marino (1903-1975) was an Italian artist born in Venice. Early in his career he adopted a style inspired by J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), but later adopted a more impressionistic style using paler, pastel colours. He had many solo exhibitions in Venice, Rome and Milan. At a 2014 exhibition for the artist at Galleria Napoleone Cacciani in Rome, the curator Ivan Cantoni wrote, “Bepi matured in the period between the two world wars, this artist brings the twentieth century tonality, post-war inspired by a vibrating brushstroke of postimpressionist matrix. Without worrying about updating his pictorial language on neocubist and neo-surrealistic modules (already aged in the 1950s) he interprets reality by simply relying on tools of their trade, which he dominates without uncertainty.”
