A striking work by Dutch artist and archaeologist Gerti Bierenbroodspot (b. 1940). As an archaeologist, Bierenbroodspot found inspiration in classical art and antiquity. Here, she copies a fresco of a decapitated female head in Pompeii. Signed to the lower margin. Float mounted in a black frame with a gilt inner edge. On paper.

Artist Biography

Gerti Bierenbroodspot (b.1940) is a Dutch artist, poet, and archaeologist. She studied at the Amsterdam University of the Arts, Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, and Institute for Drawing Teacher Training. Bierenbroodspot was a member of the team of archaeologists who conducted research in Petra, Jordan for many years. She was also involved in archaeological research in other Middle Eastern countries. She was knighted by King Hussein of Jordan in 1995 and was appointed Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion in 1999.
