German School 19th Century Oil - Angler in the Forest

Description

A solitary fisherman stands beside a tranquil river in a dense forest, with a towering rock face emerging above the trees. The vertical format emphasises the scale of the forest trees, whilst the deep shadows between them imbue the scene with mystery and intrigue. Indistinctly signed lower right. Well presented in a gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure. Faint impressions from the stretchers are visible and there is some wear around the edges of the canvas. Areas of overpainting. Light wear to the frame. Despite the noted imperfections, the condition is good for a picture of this age and the piece presents well.
