Description

Fine early 20th century female portrait by the British artist Gerald Trice Martin (1893-1961). Unsigned. Provenance: acquired by Sulis Fine Art with two further signed portraits. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The overall condition of the oil is very good. A canvas tear has been fully restored to the reverse. Inspection under UV light reveals light overpainting to the surface of the oil.

Artist Biography

Gerald Trice Martin was born in Clifton, Bristol and studied in Newlyn at the Stanhope Forbes School of Painting. After active service in WWI he continued at the RA Schools 1920-23. Martin exhibited at the RA and at the Paris Salon. During WWI he was mentioned in Despatches in 1917 for conspicuous bravery. He was later employed in the Camouflage Unit, Leamington Spa during the second conflict.
