A very fine and characterful miniature portrait in gouache on bone. This is a truly exquisite example of Georgian miniature portraits. The colour has held beautiful, especially the blue hatched background and the flush in the subject's cheeks. It also highlights a newly popular style of hat which was seen sported by women at the turn of the 18th Century. The painting is in its original glazed papier-mâché; frame with its original brass hanger. The frame has domed glazing and a pretty brass oval inner window. On the back is the original label inscribed :

Unsigned. On bone.The painting is in remarkable condition for a painting of this age. There is a miniscule amount of light foxing to the right hand side of the painting. The frame has peeling to the whole surface layer of paint which is likely due to bitumen deterioration.
