The composition is anchored by grazing cattle and a pond in the lower third, whilst the background reveals dense woodland beneath an overcast sky. Presented in a simple oak frame. Unsigned. Acquired alongside several signed works by the artist. On canvas.

Condition

Minor dirtying and abrasion to the surface of the painting. Some marks and light wear to the wooden frame. The overall condition of the painting is very good.

Artist Biography

Alfred Flavien Georges Joubin (1888-1983) was a French painter. Having been orphaned at a young age, he received his artistic training at the Académie Julian and then at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. In 1912, he settled in the artists' colony "Les Fusains" in Montmartre, Paris. He participated in the founding of the École de Montmartre, whose manifesto proclaimed: "we believe we can create a work not nourished by abstraction, but plunging into the very roots of life." A street in Digny, his birthplace, now bears his name.
