Georges Eugene Delhomme (1904-1989) - Mid 20th Century Pastel When Pigs Fly
Description
This playful and slightly naïve pastel study by Georges Delhomme captures three women riding a merry-go-round, each perched on whimsically rendered pink pigs. Set against the soft outline of Paris in the background, the scene blends light-hearted amusement with an affectionate eye for period detail. The work is as much a celebration of early 20th-century leisure as it is of fashion, each figure dressed in distinctive 1920s or 1930s attire, their stylish hats and flowing garments rendered with bold strokes and vivid colour. Delhomme’s expressive, almost improvised handling of pastel adds energy and immediacy to the composition, while the exaggerated forms and simplified perspective lend a charmingly unpolished, folk-art feel. Infused with humour, movement, and colour, the piece sits somewhere between satire and sentiment, capturing a fleeting moment of joy with both wit and warmth. Well presented in a gilt effect frame. Signed. On paper.Condition
Some minor marks to the frame. Overall in very good condition.

Artist Biography
Georges Eugene Delhomme (1904-1989) was a French painter born in Meaux, near Paris in 1904. He was a cousin through his great-aunt of celebrated painter Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899), and he was a member of the Salon d'Automne, exhibiting there twice in 1928 with the paintings 'Paysage de Normandie' and 'Nature Morte'. Delhomme worked for Lancôme, of which he was one of the founders in 1935 until 1964. He later worked for Dior during the late 1960s, before retiring to the Drome. His work embraces the classic art movements that emerged during the 20th century, capturing the essence of landscapes, portraits, still lifes, female nudes, and bathers. His work, influenced by Maurice Denis, Matisse, Seurat, Modigliani, and the Barbizon School, also reached the world of luxury, notably through his collaboration with Lancôme and Dior.
