George Weissbort (1928-2013) - 1959 Oil The Playing Fields
Description
This charming study captures a family or group of friends at play in an expansive green meadow, where dogs race through the grass and lively ball games unfold. Figures lounge, sit, and roll freely on the ground, their relaxed movements conveying a sense of ease and companionship. In the near distance, a tight cluster of cottages and farm buildings anchors the scene, while a solitary figure walks toward the gathering, drawing the viewer into the heart of the composition. Executed in muted tones beneath an overcast English sky, the work evokes the gentle intimacy and quiet pleasures of rural life. On board.Condition
Marks and scuffs to the surface of the painting, noticeably to the corners of the board.

Artist Biography
George Weissbort (1928-2013) was a Belgian born painter whose family left for England in 1933. Raised in London's East End, Weissbort attended the Central School of Arts & Crafts studying under Bernard Meninsky and also received tuition from Ruskin Spear and Rodrigo Moynihan at the Royal College of Art. He was influenced by Arthur Segal to move from the Abstract Expressionism of the 1940's to realism. He went on to exhibit regularly at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Fine Art Society. In 1964, he had a large exhibition in Paris, and in 2006 he had a retrospective at the Chambers Gallery, London, followed in 2008 by another at the Denise Yapp Gallery, Monmouth. Weissbort's gift for observation shines through alongside his technical mastery of detail and form. Each composition forms a celebration of both life and art, literal but timeless.
