Artist Biography

An American by birth, he left a successful architectural practise in New York where he built several churches, to take up painting and to reside in St. Ives, Cornwall where he was elected a member of the STISA, 1928-31 and was also involved with the St. Ives Arts Club. Little is known about his career as an artist but he designed the World War I memorial in St. Ives which he gave as gift to his adopted town. Some of his work is signed 'George Turland', his surname having been dropped. When World War II broke out in Europe he returned to America settling in California.
