Artist Biography

Etcher, wood engraver and watercolourist whose birth was registered in Hackney, London. A specialist in depicting farming subjects, most particularly the heavy horse, he often worked plein-air observing at first hand his subject matter in all seasons and weather conditions. Soper studied art at Ramsgate and spent the early part of his career as an illustrator. He began studying etching under Frank Short in 1905, probably at the Royal College of Art, and from then most of his talents were directed towards printmaking. He exhibited at the leading London galleries from 1890. These included the Royal Academy, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Alpine Gallery, Fine Art Society, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, International Society of Sculptors, Painters & Gravers, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, New English Art Club, Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists. He was elected to the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 1920. He built a new home and studio known as the 'Wildings', in Hertfordshire in 1908 and became a mentor and tutor to his artist daughters, Eileen Soper and Eva Soper (1901-1990). Both the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, include examples of his etchings in their collections. Chris Beetles Gallery regularly exhibits Soper's work.
