George Hamilton Constantine was a painter born in Sheffield the son of a saw maker. He studied at Sheffield School of Art where his peers included Stanley Royle and David Jagger. He furthered his artistic knowledge at the Courtauld Institute where he undertook a restoration and conservation course.
Noted for his charming beach scenes he was a prolific exhibitor. During the 1930’s Constantine was an assistant to John Rothenstein in Sheffield and became a Director of Graves Art Gallery in that same city until his retirement in the 1950’s. A member of the Sheffield Society of Artists, he exhibited at the RA, Lake Artists Society, Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Manchester Art Gallery and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. His work is the collections of the Sheffield Museums and the GAC. His son is the painter and curator Harry Francis (Frank) Constantine.
