This delightful watercolour study by George Holloway depicts the rear facade of Algars Manor in Iron Acton, Gloucestershire. From this perspective you can see how the building has been extended through the decades. All set within a beautiful walled garden and an abundances of mature shrubs and trees. The watercolour is signed by the artist to the lower right-hand corner. Well presented in a white card mount. Fixed to the reverse of the artwork is a paragraph of biographical text about the artist. On paper.

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some minor discolouration and foxing.

Artist Biography

Holloway was elected a member of Bristol Savages in 1923. Little is known about him before this point except that he served in the World War I as a Staff Captain in the Royal Artillery, and that he was in business with the local printing firm of Holloway and Sons. He also made over a thousand broadcasts for the BBC, was a past member of the Bristol Playgoers` Society and a life member of the British Empire Shakespeare Society. In his business life Holloway was a past Chairman at the Bristol Master Printers` Association. In 1961 George was elected an Artist member of the Savages. He was a talented painter, mainly in watercolour and was known for his fine figurative work and was also particularly skilled at depicting horses. In contrast to this he also produced some fine black and white illustrations that were published in the Bristol Illustrated News. The contents of his studio were sold at auction by Dreweatts, Bristol in 2010. His work is in the collection of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth.
