Description

A striking early 20th Century etching by George Gascoyne, after his original 1906 painting. The scene shows a front line of knights on horseback in armour, holding spears and swords. They ready themselves as the sunrises, preparing to charge. Finished with delicate, original hand colouring. The artist has signed and dated in graphite to the lower edge and the etching has been handsomely presented in an early 20th Century gilt frame with beaded strap work. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. The original plate lines are in tact. The frame has a minor loss to the upper right and left corners and some scuffing to the gilt at the lower left.

Size

27.5 x 52.5cm (10.8" x 20.7")
Framed Size: 38.7 x 63.5cm (15.2" x 25")

Artist Biography

The original printmaker George Gascoyne specialised in depicting horses in both imaginary and realistic situations. A fully member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers throughout the 1920's, George Gascoyne appears to have produced only a very limited number of works and the scarcity of these accomplished etchings and drypoints implies that few were ever published in formal editions. An able draughtsman with a particular talent for capturing even the slightest characteristic gesture of the horse, George Gascoyne took many of this subjects from the countryside immediately surrounding his home in the Regency town of Tunbridge Wells.
