Painter and illustrator who was born in Great Saughall, Cheshire and also lived in Worcestershire and in Oxfordshire. He was better known for his landscape and flower pictures, but did occasionally paint hunting scenes, one of which he exhibited at the RA in 1913. Nicholls, who was by profession a manufacturing tobacconist, also exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Baillie Gallery, Goupil Gallery, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Cambrian Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and at Walker's Gallery. He was a member of the Liver Sketching Club, where he was elected in 1881. He died in Chester and the value of his estate for probate was the 2016 equivalent of nearly £4 million.
A George Nicholls also designed posters for the LMS Railway during this period.
