Description

This accomplished watercolour study depicts Titian's self-portrait, showing the artist at around 70 years of age and wearing fine clothing. The painting is thought to have been completed around 1560-62 based on its style and Titian's portrayed age. It is one of two known self-portraits by the artist. The portrait shows Titian without the decadence and biographical objects shown in his 1566 study of himself, opting for plein clothing and more simple surroundings. The unfinished original resides in the Gemaldegalerie in Berlin. Painted in fine detail, the artist uses precise brushwork and a delicate palette to capture Titian's gentle facial features. The artist has not depicted exactly the same clothing as the original, opting to leave out Titian's gold chain symbolising his knighthood, which is an interesting take on the original self portrait. On paper.
