Artist Biography

Georges Coulon studied in Paris with Wlérick and Malfray at the École des Arts Appliqués and with Henri Bouchard at the École des Beaux-Arts. In 1946 he was a resident at the Casa Velázquez in Madrid, spending two years there. He received a bursary enabling him to travel to Italy in 1949. Coulon executed several sculptures commissioned by the French state, intended for schools and for the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations. Coulon would progressively abandon sculpture to devote himself to painting still lifes. In this medium, from which he drew from traditional savoir-faire, he was inspired by Zurbarán's still lifes and the precision of the Flemish still-life artists. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants, the Salon des Artistes Français and the Salon de Terres Latines. In 1942 he received the Prix National for sculpture.
