A charming watercolour portrait by British artist George Clark Stanton. The fine brushwork and delicate cross-hatching beautifully captures the melancholic mood of the composition. Stanton often portrayed Victorian women in dramatised emotive compositions. His love of visual narrative was shared by many artists of the time.
Signed and inscribed on the reverse.Well presented in a gilt mount and impressive leaf and berry gilt frame.
On watercolour paper.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. With large foxing spots visible to the sky area and surface scratches to the mount. With some minor losses to the frame, most notably to the corners.

George Clark Stanton was a British sculptor, silversmith and artist, born in Birmingham. He worked with Elkington and Mason in 1847 designing a card case that can be found in the V&A collection. He was elected ARSA in 1862 and RSA in 1885.
