George Arthur Hickin (1821-1885) - 1847 Oil Punting At Sunset

Description

A very fine example of 19th Century landscape painting, this oil scene, painted by George Arthur Hickin, shows the idyllic English countryside, with a man punting his small boat down a river at sunset. The river is surrounded by lush greenery and verdant pastures. The artist has signed and dated to the right of the lower edge and the painting has been presented in its original 19th Century frame with beautiful floral and foliate molding with a contemporary gilt finish. On canvas.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is some craquelure to the surface. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. Small paint loss to the lower right quadrant. The frame has a contemporary gilt finish.

Artist Biography

George was born on the 6th June 1822 in Douglas, Isle of Man. There is virtually no information about his early life or where he studied art, or if indeed he did, a he may have been self taught. On 22nd October, 1857, he married Martha Bagot at St. Saviours church in Liverpool.
Hickin died in 1880 at the young age of 58, and Martha was listed as a widow in the 1881 Census at the same address in Albert road with her two sons.
George exhibited 8 works at the Royal Academy from 1858-1880, mostly paintings of dead game, 24 at Suffolk Street 1851-62 and 6 at the British Institution 1858-62. There are 8 of his paintings in the National Collection.
He is listed in the Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club), The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and the Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists by H. L. Mallalieu.
