Gaspard Duchange - 18th Century Engraving Jupiter and Juno

Description

A finely detailed engraving by Gaspard Duchange (1662–1757) after a painting by Antoine Coypel (1661–1722). The work depicts a scene from Book XIV of Homer’s 'Iliad' in which Juno, consumed by hatred of Troy since the Trojan prince Paris awarded the Golden Apple to Venus in recognition of her superior beauty, seeks to thwart her husband Jupiter’s support for the Trojans in their war against the Greeks. Juno persuaded Hypnos, the god of Sleep, to seal Jupiter’s eyes. Next, she deceived Venus, goddess of Love, into lending her the goddess’s magical breast-band. She went to Mount Ida, where she seduced Jupiter and lulled him to sleep. Hypnos informed Neptune, god of the Sea, that Jupiter was asleep, freeing him to destroy Troy’s fleet. The work is well presented in a black frame with gilt running patterns. On paper.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including slight discolouration and light foxing to the paper. Scuffs and small losses to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in very good condition for its age.
