Gabriel von Hackl (1843-1926) was a painter, born in Maribor. He was the son of a surgeon, and initially trained to pursue the same profession as his father, before moving to Munich in 1865, where he studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste and Münchner Kunstgewerbeschule. In 1878 he became a professor and lecturer in drawing at the Münchner Kunstakademie, holding the position until 1919.
