Little is known about him before this point except that he served in the First World War as a Staff Captain in the Royal Artillery, and that he was in business with the local printing firm of Holloway and Sons. At the time he became a Blue Feather he was already a well known entertainer. He was an elocutionist and specialised in monologues. He also made over a thousand broadcasts for the BBC, was a past member of the Bristol Playgoers` Society and a life member of the British Empire Shakespeare Society. He was a talented painter, mainly in watercolour. Whilst at the Annual Exhibition, to which he exhibited from 1962 to 1977, he concentrated on landscapes.
