Fyffe Christie was a painter born in Bushey, Hertfordshire. He was the son of an illustrator. On the death of his mother in 1930 he moved to Glasgow where he eventually became an apprentice lithographic draughtsman. At the outbreak of World War II Christie joined the Scottish Rifles and for the duration of hostilities, he sketched and painted as often as circumstances permitted.
After demobilization, he enrolled at the Glasgow School of Art, 1946-50 where he studied mural painting under Walter Pritchard and during his final year was awarded the Newbury Medal for the most distinguished student of the year. The following year he began teaching at his old school in Glasgow. He was given many mural commissions including one at Glasgow University.
