Painter, born in Bushey, Hertfordshire, the son of an illustrator. On the death of his mother in 1930, he moved to Glasgow, where he eventually became an apprentice lithographic draughtsman. At the outbreak of World War II, Christie joined the Scottish Rifles, and for the duration of hostilities, he sketched and painted as often as circumstances permitted. After demobilization, he enrolled at the Glasgow School of Art from 1946 to 1950, where he studied mural painting under Walter Pritchard, and during his final year, he was awarded the Newbury Medal for the most distinguished student of the year. The following year, he began teaching at his old school in Glasgow. He was given many mural commissions, including one at Glasgow University. By 1957, he had moved to London, where he continued his teaching, and in 1958, he held a solo exhibition at Foyle's Gallery in Charing Cross Road, London. He showed at the Woodlands Gallery, Blackheath, in 1979, Cyril Gerber Fine Art, Glasgow, and in 1989, a posthumous retrospective exhibition was held at the Fairhurst Gallery in Fulham. Examples of his work are to be found in the Imperial War Museum, National Gallery of Scotland, Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum, and he exhibited at the RSA and GI. Christie was married to the sculptor Eleanor Christie.
