Signs of wear consistent with age. Considerable craquelure throughout. Light abrasions and some discolouration to the surface. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. Overall the artwork remains in good condition for its age. Wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips and indentations.

Friedrich Wilhelm Fabarius was born on 25 January 1815 in Mülheim an der Ruhr and died on 31 December 1900 in Düsseldorf. He was a German marine painter associated with the Düsseldorf School. Until 1860, Fabarius worked as a merchant and painted only in his spare time. He then relocated to Düsseldorf, where he received guidance from painters Carl Hilgers and August von Wille. The celebrated landscape painter Andreas Achenbach also served as a major influence on his work. His work is classified under the categories of marine painting and landscape painting. His subjects frequently drew on maritime and coastal scenes, including works such as 'Herring Fishing on the Dogger Bank', 'Rescue Boat at Huisduin', and 'After the Storm on the Beach at Scheveningen'. From 1866 onwards, his paintings were shown at exhibitions of the Academy in Berlin, as well as in Dresden, Vienna, London, and other cities.
