He built his reputation through partnerships with leading German botanists of the era, producing detailed hand-coloured copperplate engravings for landmark natural history publications. His most celebrated collaborations included Karl Ludwig Willdenow's catalog of the Berlin Botanical Garden, Hortus Berolinensis, and a pair of illustrated surveys of native and cultivated tree species produced between 1815 and 1825.
A late-career project with Johann Friedrich Klotzsch in 1838 documented medicinal plants. Guimpel occasionally worked outside botany too, notably illustrating an 1819 ophthalmology book.
