Description

This delightful late 18th-century portrait depicts a refined lady wearing a white mob cap with a ruffled edge, softened by an organza veil, and a delicately ruffled fichu draped over her shoulders. Her gaze is direct yet gentle, accented by a subtle half-smile at her curled lips. Her hair is styled in a tall pouf, evoking the fashionable hairstyles popularised by Marie Antoinette. Unsigned. Well presented in an ornate frame with acanthus running pattern. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Fine craquelure and light abrasions throughout. Some discolouration to the varnish. Faint stretcher marks to the canvas. The artwork has undergone previous restoration, including a number of tear repairs and corresponding overpainting. Overall the artwork is in good condition for its age. Wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips, indentations and stable cracking throughout. Some separation to the mitre joints. Overall the frame remains in good condition for its age.
