Frederick William Bolas

This rare and remarkably fine collection of watercolours by one of the principal botanical artists for the North of England Orchid Society demonstrates his skill in capturing both precise form and the natural softness of these tropical plants.
Frederick William Bolas

A remarkably fine collection of early 20th Century watercolours by the artist Frederick William Bolas (1871-1951). Almost all works in the collection have been signed and dated to the reverse, dating from the period 1913 to 1924.

Born in 1871, Frederick William Bolas was a well-known botanical painter. By the beginning of the 20th Century, he had become one of the principal botanical artists for the North of England Orchid Society, formerly the Manchester Orchid Society. Each time an orchid won a prize, Bolas was regularly commissioned by the owner to paint the flower's likeness, and many of his surviving works came from this process.

His work was recently exhibited in the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and his original works in watercolour and gouache have become highly prized amongst collectors.
