Frederick Slocombe (1847-1927) - 1877 Etching Beach Scene with Fishing Boats

Signed and dated within plate lines to the lower left-hand corner. Presented in a washline card mount and in a black frame with gilt-effect details.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, minor foxing and some water damage visible to the lower margin. Minor marks to the mount and small scuffs to the frame.

Artist Biography

Painter and printmaker part of the extended Slocombe family of artists. He is recorded as having resided in various parts of North London, Cricklewood, Islington and Hendon but painted in many parts of England and Wales as his subject matter reflects. He exhibited landscapes and genre at societies at the Royal Academy, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, DG, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and was elected a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1881. His father was Charles Philip Slocombe (1832-1895) who taught at South Kensington Schools and his brothers were artist Charles Edward Slocombe and silversmith Charles Philip Slocombe.


He was also an accomplished reproductive printmaker, producing highly finished etchings after the work of Joseph Farquharson, Alfred Parsons, Benjamin W. Leader and others. He was also related to Shirley Slocombe. Most authorities give the year of his death as 1920. I can not find this on Government records. I have however found a Frederick Slocombe who died in 1927 in Somerset.
