Frederick Pegram, the son of Alfred Pegram, a cabinet maker, was born in Somers Town on 19th December 1870. At the age of fifteen he studied at the Westminster School of Art. Fellow students included Henry Tonks, Aubrey Beardsley and Maurice Greiffenhagen. He joined the staff of the Pall Mall Gazette and in 1894 began contributing to Punch magazine.
