Frederick Mager (1882-1961) was a painter who worked as a civil engineer in the Federated Malay States for a decade from 1917. He studied with Romilly Fedden in France, 1924-5, at Southampton School of Art, 1927-31, under Percival Moore, then with Bertram Nicholls, 1935-7. He began exhibiting in the late-1930s, signing work F M, at RSA, ROI, NEAC, RA, and Paris Salon. He was elected UA in 1949. In 1945 Mager presented five watercolours to Southampton, several of which recorded wartime there; they are now in the possession of the City Museums. On his death Mager left all the books from his studio to Southampton.
