Artist Biography
Frederick John Widgery (1861-1942) was a painter and etcher, the son of artist William Widgery (1822-1893). Frederick studied at Exeter School of Art, and in Antwerp under Verlat and under Herkomer at Bushey Art School. He returned to Exeter and, apart from a short absence from the city in the late 1880’s and early 1890’s, he remained there for the duration of his long and active life. Widgery was elected a City Councillor in 1898, appointed the City’s Mayor, 1903-04, made an Honorary Freeman of Exeter in 1905, created an Alderman in 1909 and made a Justice at the Peace in 1912. In 1931, Widgery gave his local museum more than 500 drawings and works in progress. He painted landscapes and coastal scenes in oil and watercolour and also designed posters for the Great Western Railway. Examples of his work are in the collections of Larkbeare House, Exeter, National Railway Museum, Oakhampton County Council, Torre Abbey Museum and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter.
