An exquisitely captured landscape painting by the listed artist Frederick John Railton (fl.1846-1866). The scene depicts several women foraging in a wooded landscape with a gentle stream in the foreground and wild foxgloves and ferns in abundance on the left. Distant dwellings and a church bring depth to the scene, continuing onto rolling hills beneath a clouded horizon. The painting is housed in an elaborate gilt-effect frame with fluted cove, fine running patterns and foliate ornamentation. Signed to the lower edge. Further signed and inscribed 'No.2' (to stretcher verso) and inscribed with a dedication. On canvas.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. Fine craquelure is observed in areas of the painting. The canvas has been previously relined. The frame has minor surface wear consistent with age, including scuffs, stable cracks and small losses. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.
