Artist Biography
Frederick J. Maher was a painter born Frederick Jonathan Maher in Jarrow, Durham, (now Tyne and Wear) the son of a 'servant' according to censuses of the period. Nothing is known of any art training he may have received but he became an art teacher at the Rutherford Grammar School in Newcastle. He was a regular exhibitor at the Bewick Art Club and also showed work at the Artists of the Northern Counties exhibitions at the Laing Art Gallery. After leaving Rutherford College, Maher taught for many years at Armstrong College (later King's College, now Newcastle University). He was well known in Tyneside art circles and painted well into his long life, dying in Gosforth at the age of ninety-two.
