Description

This atmospheric seascape shows a large ship in choppy waters, off the Isle of Wight. Below the island's chalk cliffs stand the famous Needles, stacked three in a row. The artist has signed the watercolour to the lower right and the coastal scene has been well presented in a fine gilt-effect frame. On watercolour paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration to the watercolour. Minor wear noticeable to the gilt-effect frame.

Artist Biography

Frederick James Aldridge (1850-1933) was a British painter in oils and watercolours, best known for painting marine scenes. He lived for most of his life in Worthing. He exhibited at many venues including the RA, RHA, and RBA. A regular visitor to Cowes Week, he held exhibitions at Brighton in 1909 and Dorchester the following year. He was associated with the firm of fine art dealers and auctioneers Aldridge of Worthing. Examples of his work are held by Brighton & Hove Art Gallery, Dudley Art Gallery, and Littlehampton Museum. Failing eyesight forced him to stop painting in 1927. He died in 1933, aged 83.
