Frederick George Cotman (1850-1920) was an Ipswich-born painter of genre scenes and landscapes. He studied privately with William Thomas Griffiths, headmaster of Ipswich School of Art. He also assisted Griffiths with classes at the school as well as teaching at smaller local schools. He then progressed to the Royal Academy Schools, where he was rewarded with four silver and a gold medal in 1873. Cotman became established as a London society portrait painter. He also produced homely genre scenes. He was elected a member of both the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He showed at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle, Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Royal Scottish Academy, and Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. He became a founder member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club and was elected President in 1899. Paintings by him are held in the collections of Aberdeen Art Gallery, Brighton and Hove Museums and Art Galleries, Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service, Gallery Oldham, Museums Sheffield, National Museums Liverpool, Norwich Castle Museum, Snape Maltings, Victoria Art Gallery, and Warrington Museum and Art Gallery.
