This decorative folk art silhouette by Frederick Frith (1819-1871) depicts a 19th century child in fine dress, carrying a whip. The young figure has been delicately enhanced with gilt and white highlights by the artist, with extra attention paid to the gathered pleats and white fabric. Signed and dated to the lower left. The image has been attractively presented in an arching gilt mount and charming maple frame. On paper.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and minor foxing to the paper. The silhouette looks to have been repaired at some point, with a faint horizontal line running through the child's head. The wooden frame and gilt mount are in good condition, with period hanger still attached at the back.
