Fred Steerwood - Original Conte Crayon. In grey mount. Frederick Thomas (Fred) Steerwood was an English artist well known for his watercolours of motor cars. He painted all kinds of cars, but a lot of his work was done for motor manufacturers. Much of his art work was used on the front covers of motoring magazines, like “The Motor Owner”, “The Autocar”, but also other magazines like “Country Life” Fred Steerwood also produced many other works of art with different motoring subjects. He did some of the art work in a children’s book from the 1920s called “The Big Book of Engines”, a collection of thirty-six paintings of trains (by Millar), ships (by Mason), and vehicles (by Steerwood). After World War II his art work changed from motor cars to landscapes. As he was already in his sixties he probably retired, allowing him more time to produce other art work.
