Description
Foaming waves crash against the beach as fishermen guide their boat to shore in this atmospheric coastal scene. The artist renders the sea in expressive, impressionistic brushstrokes, imbuing the scene with a sense of movement and drama. The painting is signed by Frans Smeers (1873-1960), and the style closely resembles that of his other work. However, the piece is countersigned by Robert Montgomery (1839-1893). Well presented in a brown frame with a marbled finish and a gilt foliate running pattern. On canvas on board.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discolouration, craquelure, and surface dirt. Wear and paint loss around the edges where the canvas has previously been on stretchers. Areas of overpainting. Some scuffs and losses to the frame.
