Condition

There has been some restoration to a small puncture at the lower-left corner of the board and to an abrasion at the centre. Overall in very good condition.

Artist Biography

Franklin White (1892-1975) was an artist born in Fulham near Adelaide in South Australia. In 1913, White traveled to England ostensibly on a two-year vacation. However, inspired by a visit to the National Gallery, he decided to pursue a career in art. He visited Scotland where he made many oil sketches and also traveled to St Ives, Studland Bay, and Burnham Beeches. Returning to London, he enrolled at Heatherley's for further art education. Following a brief study period in Paris, White was accepted as a student at the Slade School of Fine Art in 1915. The following year he left his studies at the Slade for war work in the Aircraft Department of the Admiralty where he was employed drawing parts of bombed enemy planes. After the cessation of hostilities, he completed his study at the Slade School of Fine Art and joined the staff there. White showed at Agnew's, Manchester City Art Gallery, London Group, New English Art Club, and the Redfern Gallery, continuing to teach at the Slade School of Fine Art until his retirement in 1957. In 1958, he founded the Samuel Palmer School of Art where amateur painters could come to paint and show work. In 1992 a centenary exhibition was held at the Bourne Gallery, Reigate, Surrey, and in 2013/14 over 2000 works by Franklin White came up for auction at a Lincoln Saleroom. Examples of his work are held in the collections of the Ashmolean Museum, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, British Museum, Laing Art Gallery, the Royal Collection, Victoria & Albert Museum, and the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.
