Artist Biography
Painter, illustrator and printmaker, born in Bayswater, London. He studied art at the Slade School, where he won the first medal for life drawing, and at the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1896 he first exhibited at the RA, Walker Art Gallery, MAFA, NEAC, ISSPG and he also showed at the Paris Salon. He travelled extensively in Europe, South Africa and Ceylon. He wrote several books on artists including Charles Keene, William Roxby Beverley, Edward Duncan and William Callow. Emanuel also wrote for the Architectural Review, being particularly interested in interiors and was an Examiner for the Royal Drawing Society.
Late in his life a fire destroyed much of his work at his home. Examples of his work are in the collections of the Ashmolean, Guildhall Library, Hastings Museum and Art Gallery, IWM, National Museums Liverpool, Portsmouth Art Gallery, Tate Gallery, V&A, Brisbane Art Gallery,Tel Aviv Art Gallery and Johannesburg Museum.
