Description

A fine and accomplished watercolour painting with gouache details by the British artist Frank Kelsey. The scene depicts a harbour scene with ships, small boats and figures. Signed to the lower right-hand corner. There is a label with the artist's biography on the reverse, alongside a 'Tamar Gallery' label inscribed with the artist's name, title and estimated date. Well-presented in a washline card mount and in a wooden frame with a gilt inner detail. On watercolour paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Minor scuffs to the frame.

Artist Biography

London born painter of marine subjects and, unusually for a marine artist, he also painted floral pieces. Born Walter Frank Kelsey he was a prolific exhibitor how showed at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, RA, RBA, RI, Ridley Art Club, ROI and Arthur Tooth & Sons. He lived in Buckinghamshire, but is known to have been a sketching companion of Henry Scott Tuke spending time together working around Falmouth Harbour. Kelsey died at Ballinger Common, Great Missenden.
