Artist Biography
Painter born in Kent. Jameson lived in St. Ives during the 1930’s and 1940’s, and moved with his family to Falmouth after the war. He was an Associate Member of the Royal West of England Academy, and also exhibited with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, the Royal Hibernian Academy, RA, ROI, RBA, RWA, STISA of which he was an elected member, 1939-68 and at the Paris Salon. He was highly regarded as a portrait painter, but also painted landscapes, seascapes and nudes. His earlier works are signed Frank Jameson-Smith.
He originally worked as an insurance salesman, undertaking part-time evening study at Birmingham School of Art. After World War I, in which Jameson served an Officer in the Worcestershire Regiment, he travelled the county camping and painting landscapes, eventually landing up in St. Ives, Cornwall, where he rented the Loft Studio and joined the St. Ives Society of Artists. An inveterate traveller, he also lived and worked in Dublin, before at the end of World War II returning to Cornwall. An example of his work is in the collection of Falmouth Art Gallery and in 1994 W H Lane, the Penzance auctioneers sold Jameson's studio contents. His daughter Daphne Jameson (b. 1942) was also an artist and like her father has work in the collection of Falmouth Art Gallery.
