Signed and dated to the lower right. Presented in a gilt frame with a hessian slip. On canvas.

Condition

Small area of craquelure to the lower right background, see additional images. Inspection under UV shows no signs of restoration or repair. Work is in overall good condition.

Artist Biography

Frank Griffith was a painter, born in North Wales, the son of a solicitor and the eldest of three children. His family moved to Folkestone around 1895. He studied privately under W. Beach at Folkestone for some months and in late 1907 went to study in Paris, at the recommendation of family friend Theo van Rysselberge. Frank Griffith also attended La Palette and later the Académie Ranson as the first pupil of Maurice Denis. In 1912–13 he returned to London and studied under Sickert until the outbreak of World War I. He applied for a commission in the Lancashire Fusiliers and fought in France, Egypt, Gallipoli and again in France, where in late 1916/early 1917 he was captured and remained a POW until the Armistice. With his French wife, he lived for several years in France and in 1929 he relocated to England. Frank Griffith exhibited at the Independent Gallery, London, 1921, with the LG on several occasions, the Goupil Gallery, Beaux Arts Gallery, London, where he held a solo exhibition in 1934. He was a member of the Bath Society of Artists. Examples of his work are in the collections of Southampton Art Gallery, Poole Museum Service and the Ashmolean, Oxford.
