A picturesque Victorian watercolour landscape showing the countryside of Hope Valley in Derbyshire. Two young girls gather flowers on the bank of a river. The artist has signed faintly to the lower right. The painting has been presented in a simple gilt frame with card mount. There is an inscription on the mount with the date, location and artist's name. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration.

Artist Biography

Frank Gresley (1855–1936) was a British artist. He painted mainly landscapes, of which the best known are those of the River Trent at Swarkestone, Barrow upon Trent and Ingleby, Derbyshire. His father, James Stephen Gresley, was an artist, and his two sons Harold and Cuthbert also became artists.


Gresley lived most of his life in Chellaston, Derbyshire.[1] Some of his paintings were donated to Derby Museum and Art Gallery by Alfred E. Goodey.
