Description
A dramatic engraving depicting the Bible story of Jonah and the whale. The engraving by Francois Vivares (1709-1780) is after the original painting by Gaspard Poussin (1615-1675). The artist has set the scene on rough sea by jagged cliffs. A boat keels in the middle ground while worried figures look on in the foreground. The plate is inscribed along the bottom with the title, collection, date, size and publisher. The print is on wove laid to board. Signed in plate. On wove.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is foxing throughout the wove surface and losses to the bottom edge and the corners. There is a water mark on the bottom edge.
